Morgan County Tinder Box

Morgan County Burn Ban 2008!  I think New Mexico is creeping north into Colorado - it’s like a desert out there.  To keep the whole county from going up in flames, be sure to visit the links at the main site, www.morgansheriff.net concerning the 2008 fire ban.  The flyer to be issued to the public

Sunset

I was driving around on patrol this evening when I had to stop for a moment to observe this beautiful sunset.  I was at Morgan County Rd. 24 and Morgan County Rd. R.  Perhaps some of you may have seen it?  Anyway, I snapped a couple of photos before I had to fly to Snyder for a disturbance call.  Enjoy the pics.

Dry

It has been awhile since we have received rainfall here in Morgan County.  I just looked at the weather forecast for this week, and it does not look very promising…not to mention the heat.  The forecast is calling for some afternoon thundershowers later this week but the percentage is low and the heat forecast remains high.  Humidities have been in the single digits and last night, it was a bit windy.  It was like standing in a convection oven.  Denver is reporting 2008 to be the 4th driest on record thus far and may take the first place spot if rain does not come soon.  Local fire departments in Morgan County have been busy responding to numerous grass and structure fires in the past couple of weeks.  My point?  Please be careful!  Conditions make our area a tinder box just waiting for an ignition source.  Perhaps it may be time to put the fireworks away for good until next year (unless conditions don’t improve by then.)  Also, watch what you are burning and where.  If you have questions about whether or not your planned burn is a good idea, feel free to give us a call or your local fire department and someone would be glad to give you some guidance.  In the meantime, go wash and wax your cars; that way you may bring us some rain.  :)

4th of July 2008

If you are familiar with life in Morgan County, you will know that the Brush Rodeo is the main event of the 4th of July Holiday.  The rodeo in Brush, Colorado starts July 2nd, and continues through July 4th.  Many activities and events are centered on the Brush Rodeo like the 4th of July Parade in Brush, the Queen’s Dance, Art Show, and much more.  The rodeo has a spectacular finale on the night of the 4th of July with a large professional fireworks display at the Brush Fairgrounds.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, the Brush Police Department, Brush Fire Department, Morgan County Ambulance Service, Fort Morgan Police Department, and the Fort Morgan Fire Department all play an important role in making the rodeo a success whether it be by appearing in the parade, helping set off fireworks, providing security for the rodeo grounds and the parade, assisting with traffic control, or many other supportive functions.

This year, for the first time in rodeo history, the event was cancelled on the 2nd due to a freak thunderstorm that dumped several inches of rain and hail on the event and all of the town of Brush.

But, the rodeo association held a makeup event the following morning and the rest of the rodeo continued on with no major problems.

Overall, the events over this holiday weekend were a success.  If you are new to Morgan County or have never attended the Brush Rodeo, be sure to pencil it in on your calendar for next year.

Some photos from the parade…
